Question about exhibit

If we're following a Hupa cap through the process, I'm thinking I should focus the materials portion on just Hupa. Otherwise, things can get out of hand with the amount of info available just on the different plants used - even if I just stuck with California. So, my question is - how much should I focus on Hupa weaving and how much should I pan out a bit. Another example would be the Hupa didn't coil (the northern limit is between Red Bluff & Redding which is just south of where the Hupa are). Does this make sense?

  1. Yes, I agree completely. If you want to "branch out," stick to the larger region in which the Hupa interacted with other 'Klamath are peoples,' like the Karuk, Wiyot,Tolowa Yurok, etc. (with whom they share similar ceremonial practices--despite some significant linguistic diffs.) We have caps from some of those societies, too. Since we will be using the catalog cards as "labels" in the cases, people will be able to read some technical stuff (and you can explain that coiling was not a feature of Hupa weaving). Also, if we decide we need a handout on other kinds of Native California weaving, we can provide it.

  2. Oops. That should say Klamath *area* peoples.
